The IronFjord Difference
IronFjord Wealth Management was built for people who want their retirement advice to be thoughtful, coordinated, and well-managed.
As retirement approaches, financial decisions become more connected. Investment strategy, retirement income, Social Security, Medicare, Roth conversions, taxable accounts, estate planning, and year-by-year tax planning all start to affect one another. For households with meaningful assets, those decisions deserve a coordinated plan.
IronFjord brings retirement planning, investment management, and tax planning together in one fiduciary relationship. Founded by James Mayo, CFA, CFP®, EA, the firm combines advanced investment expertise, comprehensive financial planning, and individual tax planning experience.
Our view is that financial advice should be clearer, more coordinated, and better aligned with the people it is meant to serve. That is why IronFjord was built as a flat-fee fiduciary firm: to provide transparent pricing, reduce unnecessary conflicts, and bring the major pieces of retirement planning together under one relationship.
Planning, Investments, and Taxes
IronFjord brings together the three areas that matter most for many people approaching or living in retirement: financial planning, investment management, and tax planning. Each area matters on its own, but the real value comes from coordinating them together.
Financial and Retirement Planning
Retirement planning starts with understanding your full financial picture, including income, savings, investments, retirement accounts, taxable accounts, Social Security, Medicare, insurance, estate planning documents, spending needs, and long-term priorities. From there, we help you make thoughtful decisions around when to retire, how much to spend, which accounts to draw from, whether Roth conversions make sense, and how to adapt as life changes.
Investment Management
Investments are designed to support the broader retirement plan. Portfolios are built and managed in-house with an emphasis on diversification, low-cost index funds, tax efficiency, and long-term discipline. Because portfolios are managed directly by IronFjord, clients avoid additional layers of outsourced investment management fees and unnecessary complexity that can exist when advisory firms delegate portfolio management to outside platforms or use higher-cost investment products. Client assets are always held securly in the client’s name at an independent third-party custodian, Altruist, where clients maintain direct access, while IronFjord has limited authority to manage investments in the account.
Tax Planning and Preparation
Taxes are considered throughout the planning and investment management process, especially around Social Security taxation, Medicare IRMAA surcharges, Roth conversions, charitable giving, asset location, capital gains, required minimum distributions, and withdrawal sequencing. For clients who want additional coordination, income tax preparation may also be available for a separate fee through IronFjord Tax Professionals¹, a separate legal entity under common ownership, or we can coordinate with your existing tax professional.
At IronFjord, planning, investments, and taxes work together as one coordinated strategy, helping decisions get made with the full picture in mind.
Credentials That Reflect the Work We Do
Approaching retirement and living in retirement often requires decisions that cut across investments, taxes, Social Security, Medicare, income planning, estate planning, and more.
James Mayo holds the CFA®, CFP®, and EA designations, bringing together advanced training in investment management, comprehensive financial planning, and taxation. This combination supports the type of coordinated advice many retirees and pre-retirees need.
CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® (CFP®) Professional
The CFP® designation reflects training across the major areas of financial planning, including retirement planning, income planning, insurance, estate considerations, and major life decisions.
Chartered Financial Analyst® (CFA®) Charterholder
The CFA® designation reflects advanced training in investment analysis, portfolio management, asset allocation, risk, and long-term investment decision-making.
Enrolled Agent (EA)
An Enrolled Agent is an IRS-licensed tax professional authorized to represent taxpayers before the IRS. This credential reflects advanced knowledge of individual taxation and IRS procedures.
Together, these credentials help support advice that connects the major areas of retirement planning rather than treating them separately.
What Working Together Looks Like
Working with IronFjord begins with a complimentary introductory conversation. We use that time to learn more about your circumstances, priorities, and any pressing topics you’re looking to address. We also explain how we work, who we are best suited to help, and answer any questions you have about us. This is not a high-pressure sales meeting. The goal is simply to determine whether working together feels like a good mutual fit.
If we decide to move forward, we gather the relevant financial information needed to understand your current situation and future priorities. This may include investment accounts, retirement accounts, income, tax returns, insurance, estate planning documents, and other important financial details. We review the information, fill in any gaps, and identify the major planning decisions and opportunities that deserve attention.
From there, we develop recommendations, review them together, and coordinate the next steps. Over time, we continue to monitor your situation, revisit key decisions, incorporate year-by-year tax planning, and adjust as your life, tax picture, investments, and retirement needs evolve.
